How to Get Great Senior Photos

Have you ever wondered how to get those really good pictures, with just the right pose or lighting? How do they decide what colors to wear or what props to use? How do they get those shots that look so natural? At Picture Project CLT we’re here to help! Below are some tips for getting the best shots.

1. Keep Your Clothing Visually Simple

  • Solid Colors Are Key: As mentioned, solid colors are ideal because they don’t distract from your face. However, keep in mind the shades that complement your skin tone. For instance, warmer tones (like yellows, oranges, or earthy greens) can work beautifully for people with warmer undertones, while cooler shades (like blues, purples, and emerald greens) suit cooler undertones.

  • Fit and Cut: Choose clothing that flatters your body shape and feels comfortable. Clothes that are too tight or too loose might not photograph well. Aim for a well-tailored fit that helps you look put-together but still allows for natural movement.

  • Avoid Distracting Patterns: Avoid bold stripes, polka dots, or excessive patterns that can make you appear disjointed or take attention away from your face. If you want a pattern, opt for subtle, soft prints like small florals or light textures that won’t overwhelm the image.

  • Layering Options: Layers can make an outfit more dynamic. Consider adding a jacket, blazer, or scarf, which you can easily adjust or remove during the shoot for variety. A denim jacket, leather vest, or light cardigan can add depth to your look.

2. Makeup: Matte Is the Way to Go

  • Matte Foundation: Matte makeup helps eliminate shine, which is especially helpful for photography. Go for a foundation with a smooth, satin finish for a natural but polished look. You want your skin to appear smooth, even-toned, and fresh.

  • Highlighting: While shimmer can look nice in person, it can cause unwanted reflection in photos. If you really love the glow, opt for a soft, matte highlighter just on the tops of your cheekbones.

  • Eyeshadow and Lashes: If you're not a fan of bold eyeshadow, keep it simple with neutral tones that compliment your outfit. Mascara is crucial for making your eyes pop, so don’t skip this step! False lashes can be a great option if you want to add volume, but make sure they’re not too heavy, as they could look unnatural in photos.

  • Blush and Lips: A natural blush in soft pinks or peach tones can give you a healthy, youthful glow. If you don’t wear lipstick, a soft, neutral gloss or balm will add a touch of shine without being too overpowering. Consider using a lip liner to define the shape and make your lips stand out without making them look too heavy.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Use Props!

  • Personal Touches: Props help tell a story and show a little bit of your personality. Items that represent your hobbies, passions, or milestones, like musical instruments, sports gear, or items related to a club or activity, add meaningful context to your photos. If you love music, bring your guitar or a record player; if sports are your thing, a ball, jersey, or trophies can create a fun, personalized shot.

  • Sentimental Props: Bring along something sentimental, like a family heirloom or a personal item that represents a significant moment or memory. For example, a favorite book, your senior class ring, or a meaningful gift can add a personal, thoughtful element.

  • Balloons and Signs: Props like balloons (in your school’s colors, for example), a personalized sign with your graduation year, or even a simple chalkboard with a message can add a playful touch. A sign with an inspiring quote or a date can also enhance the mood you want to convey in your photos.

  • Movement Props: Consider a prop that adds a dynamic element to the shoot. A fan can create movement in your hair or dress, while twirling a scarf or tossing confetti can add a whimsical touch to the photos.

4. The “Extras” That Make a Difference

  • Touch-Up Kit: A small makeup bag with powder, lip gloss, and any other touch-up essentials is vital. This will help you stay fresh throughout the shoot.

  • Comfortable Shoes: You’ll likely be standing and moving around a lot during your shoot. A pair of comfortable, stylish shoes will help you feel more at ease. If you want to show off some high heels or dress shoes for certain poses, make sure you bring a more comfortable pair to wear between shots.

  • Water and Snacks: Staying hydrated is key to keeping your energy up. Bring a bottle of water, especially if it’s a longer session. Light snacks, like granola bars or fruit, are great to have on hand to maintain your energy and mood.

  • Friends and Family for Support: Having someone close to you around can be incredibly helpful to help calm your nerves and provide emotional support. Plus, they can help keep your hair and outfit in place, hold your props, or even assist with poses to ensure you’re comfortable and relaxed and having a great time.
